On Saturday at Kentucky Downs, the featured race of the day is the 23rd edition of the $600,000 Kentucky Turf Cup. The Grade 3 event will be run at a mile and a half on the turf and has drawn a field of eleven colts and geldings.
The morning line favorite at odds of 3-1 is War Dancer for trainer Ken McPeek. A $220,000 purchase as a yearling, the four-year-old son of War Front will have Alan Garcia aboard following a fourth place finish in the Sword Dancer Invitational (G1). With four wins from fifteen starts, two of which have come against graded stakes competition, the dark bay colt has is going for his second win of the year. War Dancer will break from post position three.
Suntracer going for first win since 2012
Second choice at morning line odds of 9-2 is Suntracer, the third-place finisher in the 2013 installment of the Kentucky Turf Cup. The six-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy, trained by Chris Block, has gone winless since 2012 and is trying to rebound after finishing ninth in the American St. Leger at Arlington Park last time out. Florent Geroux has been named to ride the chestnut horse and the pair will break from post position five.
Lightly-raced Saffron Hill makes stakes debut
Also in the field is longshot Saffron Hill who has been tabbed at odds of 10-1 on the morning line for trainer Michael Maker. A seven-time winner from fifteen starts, the seven-year-old gelded son of Giant’s Causeway will be making his stakes debut with Rafael Bejarano aboard for the first time. He has won two of his three starts this year and was last seen going gate to wire against optional claiming company at Saratoga. Saffron Hill will break from post eight.
