
Songbird and Rachel's Valentina Set for Showdown in $1 Million Juvenile Fillies
On Saturday at Keeneland, Breeders Cup action will kick off with the $1 million Juvenile Fillies. The Grade 1 event will be contested at a mile and a sixteenth on the main track and has drawn a field of ten.
The undefeated Songbird will try to remain perfect and has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at odds of 7-5 for trainer Jerry Holledorfer. The dark bay filly is a daughter of Medaglia d’Oro and was purchased for $400,000 as a yearling. She is three-for-three and is coming into this race off of back to back wins against Grade 1 competition, most recently in the Chandelier Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. Mike Smith, her regular rider, will be in the irons from the outside post.
Royally-bred Rachel's Valentina destined for greatness
Second choice at morning line odds of 7-2 is Rachel’s Valentina for trainer Todd Pletcher. Bred and owned by Stonestreet Stables, the bay filly is by Bernardini and is the second foal out of Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra. After breaking her maiden in her debut, she delivered as the favorite in the Spinaway Stakes (G1) in her second start. John Velazquez will be aboard and they will break from post position nine.
Consistent Land Over Sea a threat from the inside
Also in the field at morning line odds of 8-1 is Land Over Sea for trainer Doug O’Neill. A chestnut daughter of Bellamy Road, she was purchased for $130,000 by Reddam Racing and has one win from four starts. She has finished on the board but behind Songbird in her last two races and was second last time out. Mario Gutierrez, aboard for all four starts, will again be her pilot and they are scheduled to break from the inside post.
