Kentucky Derby 2023: Versatile Mage can do some Derby magic

Though the field for the $200,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2) at Churchill Downs is small on size, it is large on quality. On paper, the mile and an eighth race shapes up as a showdown between On Fire Baby and Fiftyshadesofhay.
With three wins at Churchill Downs already on her resume, On Fire Baby could be easily referred to as a “horse for the course”. Trained by Gary Hartlage and ridden in all fifteen career starts by Joe Johnson, the five-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken delivered as the favorite in her most recent start, the La Troienne Stake (G1) on May 2. She has been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite and will break from post position four on the main dirt track against five other fillies and mares aged three and up.
Fiftyshadesofhay aims for second straight graded win
Directly to her outside is Bob Baffert’s formidable filly, Fiftyshadesofhay (9-5). John Velazquez will be back in the irons after guiding the familiar red and yellow silks of Mike Pegram to victory in the Ruffian Handicap (G2) in her last outing on May 11. Though she won by under a length as the favorite, it was a victory that was deceptively easy.
Flashy American a consistent threat on the Churchill dirt
Though she is unproven at Churchill Downs, the well-traveled filly has competed at eight different racetracks and won at five of them so it does not appear she is the type that needs to take her racetrack with her to succeed. Also in the field as the 7-2 third choice is Flashy American, a Churchill Downs specialist. The Ken McPeek-trained daughter of Flashy Bull has been on the board in six of her seven starts under the Twin Spires and will get the services of jockey Julian Leparoux.
