R Free Roll Taking on Five Rivals in $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes
On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the track will host the 3rd edition of the $100,000 Sugar Swirl Stakes. The Grade 3 race will be run at six furlongs on the main track and has drawn a field of six fillies and mares.
R Free Roll has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at 8-5 for trainer Kirk Ziadie. The four-year-old daughter of Rockport Harbor has three wins from seven starts this year and has won seven of her eighteen total starts. She was second in the Sugar Swirl Stakes last year, beaten only a neck. Since her last effort, a fifth-place finish in the TCA Stakes (G2), she has been training forwardly at Gulfstream Park West and will have Edgard Zayas back aboard from post four.
Merry Meadow going for two wins in a row
Second choice at 2-1 on the morning line is Merry Meadow, a graded stakes winner trained by Mark Hennig. A four-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes, she delivered over six rivals as the favorite last time out to win the Sky Beauty for her third win of the year. The graded stakes winning filly has won six times throughout her career and will be making her first start at Gulfstream. Javier Castellano will be back in the irons and they will break from post two.
Ol Donyo a perfect two for two at Gulfstream
Also in the field at 4-1 on the morning line is Ol Donyo who will be trying to add a graded stakes win to her resume. Trained by Martin Wolfson, the four-year-old daughter of Curlin was last seen finishing third behind Merry Meadow in the Sky Beauty. She has two wins from three starts this year, both of which came at Gulfstream Park. Joel Rosario has picked up the mount for the first time and they will break from post position six.
