Mshawish Facing Five Rivals in Contentious $150,000 Hal's Hope Stakes
On Saturday at Gulfstream Park, the stakes action will continue with the $150,000 Hals Hope Stakes. The Grade 3 will be contested at one mile on the main track and has attracted a field of six colts and geldings.
Mshawish has been installed as the morning line favorite in the competitive field at odds of 8-5 for trainer Todd Pletcher. A six-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, he is a six-time career winner and is a multiple graded stakes winner on turf. He switched to conventional dirt last time out and finished fourth in the Cigar Mile (G1) in November. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post position three.
Matrooh looking for second graded stakes win
Second choice at morning line odds of 9-5 is Matrooh for trainer Chad Brown. A gelded son of Distorted Humor, the six-year-old has won five of his twelve starts and earned his first graded stakes victory two starts back in the Bold Ruler Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park. He was third last time out in the Cigar Mile (G1) and is scheduled to break from the rail under jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.
Hard-knocking Valid has home track advantage
Also in the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is Valid for trainer Marcus Vitali. A six-year-old gelded son of Medaglia d’Oro, he is an eleven time career winner and a multiple graded stakes winner. After a game fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1), he rebounded to win the Harlan’s Holiday Stakes last time out. Luis Saez will be in the irons and they will break from post four.
