On Sunday at Saratoga, the featured race will showcase some of the top turf horses in the country in the 40th edition of the Sword Dancer Invitational. The Grade 1 event offers a purse of $500,000 and will be run at a mile and a half on the inner turf course.
Topping the field of seven at odds of 2-1 on the morning line is Main Sequence with Rajiv Maragh in the irons. Trained by Graham Motion, the five-year-old gelded son of Aldebaran made his United States debut a winning one in the United Nations (G1) in July in what was his first start in nine months. Bred and owned by Flaxman Holdings, Ltd., Main Sequence began his career with four consecutive wins in Great Britain and is going for his second Grade 1 victory.
Twilight Eclipse trying to turn tables on Main Sequence
Second choice on the morning line at 5-2 is Twilight Eclipse, the runner-up in the Sword Dance (G1) last summer. The five-year-old gelded son of Purim will have regular rider Jose Lezcano aboard carrying the gold and black silks of West Point Thoroughbreds. Trained by Tom Albertrani, he will try to avenge a narrow defeat to Main Sequence in the United Nations (G1) and earn his second win of the year. He has six career victories from eighteen starts.
Imagining attempting to rebound
Also in the field is Imagining, a homebred for the Phipps stable at odds of 7-2 on the morning line. Trained by Shug McGaughey and ridden by Joel Rosario, the six-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway is a multiple graded stakes winner and earned the biggest victory of his career in May in the Man ‘O War (G1) at Belmont. He was last seen finishing sixth in the Manhattan (G1) and will be trying to earn his second win of the year.
