The $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks features a field of eight three year-old fillies set to go a mile and a sixteenth on dirt March 22 in New Mexico.
Bob Baffert trains the even-money favorite Callback who was impressive winning the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes in her last start January 31 at Santa Anita. Callback, a daughter of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, has won two of four career starts for earnings of $245,450. In addition to her Grade 1 score, Callback finished second in the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes January 3. Martin Garcia will be aboard the speedy filly breaking from post two.
Other half of Baffert entry is second choice
Baffert, who prepped eventual Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty in the Sunland Oaks in 2011, will also saddle the 3/1 second choice on the morning line in Maybellene. The daughter of Lookin At Lucky finished fourth in the China Doll Stakes March 4 after running eighth in the Las Virgenes. Maybellene has posted two wins in nine starts for earnings of $156,194. Jockey Victor Espinoza gets the call breaking from post eight.
Suva Harbor must improve
Suva Harbor (4/1) ran eighth in the Island Fashion Stakes February 22 in her last start after a sixth place finish in the Las Virgenes. The John Sadler trainee has two wins in six career starts, but looked overmatched in both tries against stakes company. Martin Pedroza will ride breaking from post five.
