On Saturday at Belmont Park, New Yorks thriving breeding program will be celebrated for Empire Showcase Day. The stakes action kicks off with the $250,000 Sleepy Hollow, a one mile race restricted to two-year-olds foaled in the state.
Ostrolenka has been installed as the 9-5 favorite in the field of seven. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the two-year-old son of Musket Man was bred by owner Eric Fein and will have regular rider John Velazquez in the irons. After a seventh-place finish in his debut over a sloppy track, he rebounded next time out with a romp over eight rivals, drawing off by 14 ¼ lengths. The bay colt will break from post position two.
Good Luck Gus wheeling back after win at upstate
Good Luck Gus, second choice on the morning line at 3-1, will break from the outside post under Joel Rosario. Trained by Rudy Rodriguez, the bay colt was purchased for $97,000 as a yearling at Saratoga. After breaking his maiden in his second start, the bay son of freshman sire Lookin at Lucky was fourth in the Funny Cide Stakes and shipped to Finger Lakes to win the New York Breeders’ Futurity as the favorite.
Equipment change and jockey switch for Bullheaded Boy
Todd Pletcher will also saddle Bullheaded Boy, set at odds of 7-2 on the morning line. The dark bay son of Bullsbay, a $115,000 purchase by Gary Barber in the spring, will get the addition of blinkers for the first time after a runner-up effort last time out. He broke his maiden at first asking at Saratoga and has been on the board in his last two starts, both against stakes company. Jose Ortiz will pick up the mount.
